Kefir For Breast Cancer

  Kefir has many names : kefir yogurt, kefir cheese, fermented milk ... is kefir good for breast cancer? It is produced by fermentation of cow’s milk , goat’s milk or even coconut milk with kefir grains. Kefir was first produced in the nineteenth century by north Caucasians then it spread to Russia, Europe and USA.

It has a sharp flavor and a creamy taste similar to liquid yogurt or butter milk. It can be made from whole or skimmed milk. Kefir contains about 30 to 50 strains of beneficial bacteria that called probiotics and this have attracted the attention of scientists to study the properties and benefits of this substance. And these benefits have been tasted in a large number of studies. However it remains studies without sufficient evidence of its effectiveness.  

The results showed the following:

  • Reducing inflammatory disease.

  • Relieve constipation.

  • Helping lose weight.

  • Improve lactose digestion.

  • Alleviation of diabetes.

  • Anti-cancer properties.

       The safety period of its use in adults is 6 months, compared to only 10 days for children. The safety of consuming kefir in pregnant and breastfeeding women is unknown.  

Kefir for breast cancer:

  Many studies have shown that kefir can have an effect in reducing the risk of cancer , as it has a protective  role in addition to potential curative effects.
      Some bioactive components of kefir such as polyacrylamide, peptides and sphingolipids have great potential to inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Kefir, according to studies, works on different types of cancer including colon and rectal cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, breast cancer, lung cancer and melanoma.
      And these anti-cancer properties are affected by the fermentation conditions, so that, the kefir extracts prepared under standard conditions were examined against different types of cancer cells . Kefir can destroy cancer cells without harming healthy cells, in addition to its ability to protect against DNA changes that lead to cancer.

  • Breast cancer : kefir fermented for 24 hours showed clear suppression of cancer cells proliferation.

  • Leukemia : kefir can stop the proliferation of leukemia cells without harm to healthy cells.

  • Colon cancer : kefir contains large amounts of acetic and lactic acid, which protect against damage to DNA in cells of the colon which leads to the formation of cancer later. In addition to this protective role, kefir had a role in reducing the growth of cancerous cells, and the study claimed that this was due to antioxidant content. However, studies did not show any positive effect of kefir on stopping metastases.

  • Skin cancer : another study showed the ability of kefir to protect skin cells from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, which is referred to the active ingredients in kefir and not only due to antioxidants.

From the above, kefir can be considered a very healthy food that maintains the health of the body, reduce DNA damage and the risk of cancer , with attention to the fact that kefir more protective than curative.
      Certainly, appropriate medical treatment is indispensable according to the degree of cancer and its spread, in combination with  healthy food such as kefir which studies have shown its benefits and importance.
